Joan Blumenfeld, painter

ABOUT

I returned to painting several years ago after a successful career as an architect; learning and growing in my approach and my technique, I never know exactly where a painting will end up until it is done.  At around the same time I moved to Reno, NV, and the western landscape figures large in my work.  I start with the wish to get the same response in a viewer as my own sense of wonder from whatever I am looking at.

I spent many of my teenage weekends museum and gallery hopping in NYC and elsewhere; I couldn’t get enough of the energy and excitement of those experiences.  I still get a thrill from seeing work that makes me think or dream.

My own work is heavily influenced by my background; all the same ingredients go into both architecture and painting; perspective, color, form, materiality, and light.  When they are most effective, both require a unique and fresh eye that then evokes an emotional response from the viewer, including myself.  It is my hope that I am sometimes successful in this.
